Exercise Physiology

Our team of accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) is dedicated to empowering you with evidence-based exercise interventions and lifestyle strategies, all personalised to your unique health journey. Our AEPs work closely with local GP’s and specialists to ensure you receive the best program and plan for your health.

What is an Exercise Physiologist?

An Exercise Physiologist is a university-qualified health professional specialising in the benefits of exercise to help patients get fitter, stronger, and healthier. They are not just about general fitness. Rather, they possess a deep understanding of the body’s responses and adaptations to exercise and are skilled in designing safe and effective exercise interventions for people with chronic conditions, injuries, or those looking to improve their overall health and wellbeing.
Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) in Australia are recognised by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA), ensuring they meet stringent competency standards in exercise delivery. Whether it’s managing chronic diseases, injury rehabilitation, or preventive health, AEPs use their expertise to craft tailored exercise plans that address individual health needs and goals.

Our Exercise Physiology Services

We believe in a holistic approach to health, integrating the science of exercise with practical, individualised interventions. Our services are broad yet tailored, covering a wide spectrum of health conditions and goals:
–  Chronic Disease Management: Our AEPs design exercise programmes that specifically target the management and prevention of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, mental health issues, and more. Through regular monitoring and adjustment of your programme, we aim to improve your condition and quality of life.
– Injury Rehabilitation and Prevention: We specialise in rehabilitation programmes that aid in the recovery from injuries, surgeries, or musculoskeletal conditions. By focusing on restoring strength, flexibility, and balance, we not only facilitate your recovery but also strategise on preventing future injuries.
– Performance Enhancement: For athletes or individuals looking to improve their physical performance, our services extend to enhancing strength, endurance, technique, and overall athletic ability. Our evidence-based approach ensures that your training is both effective and safe.
– Lifestyle and Weight Management: Our team assists in developing exercise and lifestyle modification plans that promote sustainable weight management and healthy living. We focus on practical interventions that fit into your life, enhancing your overall wellbeing.
Aged Care and Falls Prevention: Tailored exercise programmes for older adults aim to improve mobility, strength, and balance, significantly reducing the risk of falls and enhancing independence and quality of life.

What Will My Initial AEP Appointment Involve?

During your initial consultation, your Exercise Physiologist will take subjective and objective measures. Subjective measures include a medical history, current lifestyle and any social, environmental or psychological factors that affect exercise capacity, goals/targets for the treatment. Objective measures are easily repeatable and used to assess success of the exercise intervention such as a 6-minute walk test or a hand grip strength test.
After the initial assessment you will be provided with a specially tailored, clinical evidence based, exercise program. Programs can then be modified/refined based on outcome measures or personal preference. These can take the form of:

  • Gym-based programs
  • Home programs
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Pilates
  • Group classes
  • Dance programs

We have a gym and Pilates studio at Physio Place where you can complete the programs, or we can attend external sites such as local gyms and pools.
